Whether you want to increase the size of your breasts, decrease their size, or restore the shape to a more youthful position, breast surgery is an option to achieve your desires.
Breast augmentation, or breast implant surgery is performed for those seeking an increase in volume of their breasts. Saline or silicone implants can be used and may be inserted transaxillary (endoscopically through the armpit) or inframammary—depending on the implant you select.
Dr. Owsley performed his first endoscopic breast augmentation in 1995, and continues to use this technique due to its many advantages, such as:
- No scarring on the breast
- Does not cut any breast tissue
- Decreases the risk of sensory loss
- Better visualization at the time of the surgery
Saline implants are generally inserted transaxillary and silicone gel implants inserted with a inframammary incision. The implants are put underneath the pectoralis major muscle to achieve a more natural appearance and to decrease certain risks.
Dr. Owsley will tailor your augmentation needs for size and implant shape that best suits your body. If a secondary breast augmentation is needed, the same incision site is used in most cases.
What to Expect at the Consultation Appointment
At your consultation appointment, you will be asked to undress from the waist up and put on a medical drape. Dr. Owsley, accompanied by his female assistant, will perform a quick exam and take measurements of your breasts.
These measurements will help determine the profile of the implant that is best suited for you, and also determine if a breast lift is needed to achieve the best results. He will then step out of the room and allow you to get dressed.
When you are dressed, Dr. Owsley will return and discuss all your surgical options—saline versus silicone implants and the surgical method (where the incisions will be made). Details of the surgery, including risks and benefits will be covered in detail.
We will provide fee quotes for saline and silicone implants and discuss financing options. Once a decision is made with regard to implant type, we will schedule your surgery. We require a deposit to secure your surgery date. Your pre- and postoperative appointments will also be made at this time.
About the Preoperative Appointment
Preoperative appointments for breast augmentation are led by a surgical registered nurse. You will try on implants to find the volume that is best suited for your body type. It’s helpful to bring a sports bra and a tight fitting shirt to help you evaluate volume.
Payment for the balance of your surgery is required at your preoperative appointment.
About the Procedure
The procedure is done at Northwest Specialty Hospital. You will be placed in a gown, and IV will be started, and Dr. Owsley will make surgical markings in the pre-op area. You will then be taken to the operating room where your surgery is performed. After the procedure is done you will be taken to the Recovery room while you wake up (usually 1-2 hours). You then be discharged home.
Recovery and Typical Results
In most cases you will be able to return to work or light activity in 7 to 10 days. It takes three months for the breasts to truly “settle” in their final position. External sutures are not normally used; medical grade glue is used instead. This is to be kept in place until it wears off naturally in about two weeks.
This surgery is for those who seek to change the shape of their breast; most commonly to correct droopy breasts. This surgery is often combined with an augmentation, but it is not necessary for those happy with the current volume of their breasts.
What to Expect at the Consultation Appointment
Similar to the breast augmentation consult appointment, you will be asked to undress from the waist up and put on a medical drape. Dr. Owsley, accompanied by his female assistant, will perform a quick exam and take measurements of your breasts.
These measurements will help determine the amount of breast tissue you have and the degree of ptosis you are presenting with. This will determine if a breast lift is needed to achieve the best results. He will then step out of the room and allow you to get dressed.
When you are dressed, Dr. Owsley will return and discuss all your surgical options—and the surgical method (where the incisions will be made). Details of the surgery, including risks and benefits will be covered in detail.
Reductions are performed in women with large breasts to alleviate symptoms of back and shoulder pain. If the breasts are large enough and coupled with other health problems and/or symptoms, there is a possibility that the procedure could be covered by your insurance.
Typical Results and Recovery
The results of reduction surgery will improve back pain, improve the breast’s shape, improve nipple position, and improve the patient’s tolerance to physical activity. It will also enhance body image.
For breast reduction surgery, patients may stay overnight at the hospital. It takes several months for the breasts to achieve their final shape.
